One of the actual topics of interest this week smothered by
Manti Te’o and Lance Armstrong was minority hirings in the NFL. Apparently a lot of old white guys hire a lot
of white guys, you know the norm. To be
honest, if Mike Silver (Yahoo Sports) wouldn't have brought it up, I probably wouldn't have noticed. As I listened to the local media discuss the topic, I couldn't help but laugh.
If I am the NFL Public Relations department, I would
immediately send out a Press Release or a Tweet and it would read “Media, are
you really challenging our minority hiring practices”. I go
out of my way not to cover the National Media from an HMW standpoint and with
this particular topic; I'm focusing on the local sports media. Why is the media shocked at this
revelation? Is this a little pot calling
the kettle black? What is the Rooney
Rule? How about calling out players!
In Houston, whenever the topic of racial injustice, race or
hell black jelly beans arise, there is only one black man to turn to, Nick
Wright. All jokes aside, Friday morning
I heard Nick Wright talking about 13 coaching and General Manager positions filled by white men. That was the
first instance I heard of the topic and the rest of the shows/stations hit
it. Although a topical subject and I
agreed with what most had to say, I couldn't help but noticed how everyone
seemed SHOCKED. What planet are you on
if this comes as a surprise? We don’t
need any discussions and I’m not advocating white men losing their jobs but
lets keep it real, this is called 2013.
Shocked would be if 13 minorities would have got the jobs.
Here is where things get interesting. We are dealing with two industries, NFL and
Sports Media. Again I’m talking about
the local media with the understanding; hosts that talk on air are not
responsible for personnel. With that
said, when I hear these guys talk about the unbalance and discrepancy of
minorities in NFL leadership positions, it's a joke to me. It’s really hard for me to listen to the
local media blast the NFL about their diversity when the local media got there own Good Ole Boy Network. A few
of them tried to use mathematics of minority players to
minority coach representation. The thought is, there should be somewhat of a correlation of players to coaches. WOW, I guess I can pull a few metrics myself, you know
like Houston’s Population or Minority Audience to radio personalities? Bottom line, locally, your minority representation is just as shitty as
the NFL. At least the NFL has somewhat
of a crutch in that the league is going offensive and there are not many
minority Offensive Minds.
If anyone in the media gives credence to the Rooney Rule
and still try to debate race, they are not ready talk. The mere fact you are not questioning the
Rooney Rule shows me how naive you are.
In 2013, if you have to implement a rule to make hiring a person leveled,
the argument becomes flawed from the jump.
I don’t think there should be a Rooney Rule because the minority will
have it hovering over his head throughout his career. Of course, Mike Tomlin enjoys his
millions but as a man to hear someone say, you got a shot BECAUSE you had
help. Maybe I’m simple, but I would like
to believe I won because I’m the best.
Again, let’s be real, has the Rooney Rule really helped and I am not
sure revamping it will do much difference.
Like I said, I listened to the majority of the shows and I
was waiting for that one host to ask the question I've been pondering for some
time. Why aren't the players as vocal as
the media about the lack of minority head coaches? Of course the media didn't ask this question
because they are droids reading a script and any deviation from that script is
like Matt Schaub breaking the pocket. It’s
really odd to hear players blast Roger Goodell on fines and changing the game,
players going after retirees for Brain Injury Gate but when it comes to a topic
as sensitive as this, race. What’s more
odd, the media is not asking them about it.
WRAP IT UP
I don’t care to hear the local media discuss the lack of
minority coaches in the NFL when their employers are doing the same. Sure, I will listen but at the end of the
day, I think it’s laughable to hear local host try to show concern.
Here’s an exercise, Houston has 4 Sports Talk

are in prime time week day roles?

Breath, and this is the part when your rebuttal becomes "THE RACE CARD" OUT

fred davis asked on his show,"what happened to the rooney rule?", so it was brought up, but it didn't seem like others wanted to discuss it. And he brought it up before siver's article. i do agree however, this has been swept under the carpet with hurricane force. even the rooneys are quiet on this issue.
